#VSW2018 + #VanHacks Hackathon Mingler & Kickoff | SEPARATE TICKET REQUIRED
Limited Capacity seats available

We call you, hackers of Vancouver, to join us over a weekend to create tech solutions that solve challenging issues faced by our community's not-for-profit institutions whose aim is to do social good. This year we will be serving Ocean Wise, Weekend Fuelbag, Working Gear, BabyGoRound, Mealshare.

VanHacks is designed around the mantra of acting local and thinking global. All hacks are encouraged to be published open source so that an organization in Vancouver can benefit just as much as a similar nonprofit on the other side of Canada or the other side of the World.

VanHacks 2018 is co-organized by Vancouver Startup Week, Two Tall Totems and VIDIA. It brings together 180+ developers and designers to work towards building a better, more unified Vancouver.

You must have a hackathon ticket in order to attend this event as a #VSW2018 pass will not get you access into the hackathon.
Please visit check out http://www.vanhacks.com for more information about this event and to buy a hackathon pass.

Data and AI Hackathon hosted by Microsoft
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Join Microsoft for their first event Monday, September 24th in their suite 1100 - 1111 West Georgia office for a half-day hackathon.
During this hackathon you will be working on building a Raspberry PI home surveillance system!

A Raspberry PI is a small, affordable computer that can be used for programming and fun projects. For Microsoft Canada’s first AI Hackathon, this submission presents a simple Raspberry PI Home Surveillance System that leverages Microsoft’s Cognitive Services for face recognition; and outlines a set of features on the roadmap.
Microsoft’s Cognitive Services leverage the latest advances in AI and deep learning technologies and provide exceptional capabilities to bring intelligence into applications. Particularly, the Face API, part of Cognitive Services, enables applications to have immediate face detection and recognition abilities. For this submission, the Face API is integrated within a Python-based home detection system powered by a Raspberry PI along with a camera.

We will divide attendees into teams and provide them with a high-level architecture, suggested programming libraries, and template code to work with. Participants will need to fill in the remaining gaps with the overall goal of building the surveillance system (hardware and on Azure).

This event will be such that people without programming background can certainly participate, by reading hints and seeing sample code.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Is Technology Taking our Jobs?
Limited Capacity filling up

Automation, driven by technological progress, has been expanding for the past several decades. As the pace of development increases, so has the urgency in the debate about the potential effects of automation on jobs, employment, and human activity.
Will new technology spawn mass unemployment, as the robots take jobs away from humans? Or is this part of a cycle in which some jobs will become obsolete, while new jobs will be created?
Based on the Oxford style debates popularized by the podcast 'Intelligence Squared', The BC chapter of Women in Communications and Technology brings you Women in Debate: Is technology taking our jobs?
You'll also have a chance to win a wine tasting at Township 7 for you and 9 friends!

Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Join us this Sep 27 for the re-launch of the Vancouver Innovation Labs. We never went away, but we’ve been dormant for quite some time. What better way to reconnect than by doing what we do best: a session of forward-looking scenarios and the ensuing discussions of key emerging technologies and fringe scientific discoveries that are poised to disrupt establishing industries, business models and generate long-term impact innovations.

We’ll be talking about specific technology examples in 3 horizons + 1:

Horizon 1: Technology happening now
Horizon 2: Near future (10-20 years)
Horizon 3: Distant future (20+ years)
Ghost Tech: Fringe science/tech

We’ll run the classics: crypto, IoT, big data and some of the more esoteric newcomers: internet of DNA, shape-shifting matter, asteroid mining and others.

Also, we will have a surprise activity.

Introductory interactive workshop on the technology business basics you need to know and that's right for your idea and/or business.
